Installation of the Chilipepper CP6000 Hot Water Demand Pump

WARNING:  Risk of electric shock.  This pump is supplied with a grounding conductor and a grounding-type attachment plug. To reduce the risk of electric shock, be certain that it is connected only to a properly grounded grounding-type receptacle.

Your Chilipepper Model CP6000 includes:
The Chilipepper Appliance
A push button
Two brass “T” fittings
Two brass thread adaptors
One brass hose adaptors (Not Attached)
One washer for hose adaptors (Not Attached)
Three black plastic check valve spacers 

*   In Addition to the Above, you will need to purchase four Stainless Steel (SS) hoses (SS is not required but recommended) with cone style washers, two for connecting the T fittings to the shut-off valves, and two for connecting the Chilipepper to the T fittings. The T fittings are  3/8” OD Comp and the Chilipepper fittings are 1/2” FIP. The length and thread size of the hoses needed to complete the installation depends on the shut off valves under the sink.

 * New Construction, Remodeling or if new supply valves are needed, use Dual Outlet Supply valves in place of the T fittings for easy installation.

 *Some Special Promotions have included the SS hoses and the T fittings as a Kit; they are promotions and are not the standard package.

  You will need a 110 Volt Outlet close enough to plug in the 6 foot long Chilipepper power cord.

 1.  Thread the brass hose adaptor onto the hot water inlet fitting on the end of the Chilipepper. (See Figure 1)  Be careful that the washer stays in place while threading the adaptor onto the Chilipepper outlet fitting.  Do not over tighten the brass adaptor as you could damage the washer and cause a leak.

 ALWAYS USE 2 WRENCHES WHEN CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING HOSES TO THE CHILIPEPPER, TOO MUCH TORQUE WITH ONE WRENCH COULD DAMAGE OR BREAK THE PUMP.

 

DO NOT USE TEFLON TAPE OR PIPE DOPE.

2.  Pre-assemble the SS hoses with the T’s in a straight line (See Figure 2) you will now have two pre-assembled sets of hoses connected to T’s.  The thread adaptor may be threaded onto the T when shipped and can be removed. The thread adaptor may only be needed if the shut off valves under the sink are 1/2 FIP thread. (See Figure 2)

 3. Connect the 2 pre-assembled sets to the Chilipepper outlet fittings using two wrenches, one on the brass fitting and one on the SS hose fitting.  Too much torque on the Chilipepper could damage or break the pump head.

4. Now you are ready to connect the Chilipepper under the sink.

 5. Turn off the two shut-off valves that supply water to your fixtures.

 6. Open the faucet to relieve any system pressure.

 7.  Disconnect the existing hoses from the shut-off valves, and reconnect them to the T fittings.  (Inspect the rubber washers in the hoses to make sure they can be reused.)

Make sure to connect the T’s to the correct hot and cold water hoses.  There is a “H” for Hot and a “C” for Cold marked on the back of the Chilipepper  (See Figure 3)

 8. Place the Chilipepper on the floor of the cabinet resting on its rubber feet.

 9. Now connect the remaining end of the hose assembly to the shut off valves.  Again, making sure the Hot and Cold are connected to the correct valves.   (See Figure 3)

10. Turn on both water valves, and check for leaks.

An old plumber’s trick is to place a clean newspaper under the Chilipepper after the installation for 10 minutes. If there’s a leak it will be easy to find.

 11.  If you are going to mount the push button, drill a ½” hole through the cabinet where you want the button located.  Feed the cable through the hole and connect the two terminals to the push button.  Push the button into the ½” hole.

 If additional buttons are used, wire them in parallel with the first one, and make sure not to use illuminated buttons.

 ! Make sure both water valves are turned on before plugging in the power cord!!!

 Operation of the Chilipepper appliance without water can damage the pump and void the warranty.  Open both water valves before plugging in the power cord.

OPERATION

 On the front of the Chilipepper there is a Control Knob which adjusts the shut-off sensitivity.

Turning the control knob clockwise increases the distance the hot water travels, and turning it counter-clockwise reduces the distance the hot water travels. 

Turning the control clockwise will result in hotter water at the faucet but may cause some warm water to enter the cold water line for a few feet.

 If the button is pressed and there is already hot water in the Chilipepper, the pump will not turn on.

Trouble Shooting

 Note: There is some leakage possible through the Chilipepper pump from hot to cold. When working on the plumbing in a home where the Chilipepper is installed it may be necessary to shut the hot or cold valve off at the fixture where the Chilipepper is installed, to isolate the hot and cold water runs during pluming repairs.

 Press the start button and nothing happens.
Be sure there is electricity at the outlet.  Sometimes the disposal outlet has only one of the two receptacles switched, and sometimes the whole outlet is switched.

 The Chilipepper runs but hot water doesn’t reach the sink, or takes longer than without the Chilipepper.
Make sure that both shut off valves under the sink are turned fully on.

 The Chilipepper runs without pushing the button.
Check the wires connected to the button to make sure they are not touching.  Also make sure the button or buttons being used are non-lighted.

 How to clean the spring loaded check valve.

Unthread the brass hose adaptor from the inlet (cold) fitting of the Chilipepper appliance.  Remove the spring and rubber valve check, check for dirt, sand, etc. and clean.  Replace the valve check and spring.

 When threading the brass fitting on, place a pencil inside the hole of the fitting to keep the spring centered inside the rubber washer. 

 Check for leaks after the water is turned back on.

 Hot water is in my cold line when the Chilipepper has not been operating.
The first thing would be to clean the check valve.  If that doesn’t work, then use one of the plastic spacers included with each Chilipepper, to put more pressure on the valve check. 

 Start by placing a single spacer on top of the spring and replace the brass hose adaptor which holds the spring in place.

 When threading the brass fitting on, place a pencil inside the hole of the fitting to keep the spring and spacer centered inside the rubber washer. 

 Check for leaks after the water is turned back on.
